Worship...

    Such a hard thing it is to try and define the purpose
    that you are called to in such a short statement. Ultimately
    our purpose is to worship. Not just to sing songs about God
    but to live out Romans 12, presenting our bodies as a living
    sacrifice, Biblically, this is real worship... living out a life
    whole-heartedly devoted to serving God obediently. When
    you think of it like this, then worship leaders (or lead
    worshippers) are really leading "songs about worship";
    songs that we live out between Sundays and between events.
    God is infinitely worthy of all glory and honor. It is our
    aim to use our gifts and abilities for just that, glorifying
    and honoring God. There is nothing glorifying about
    singing empty words from a vain heart.

Performance...

Since real worship is a life devoted to God in all that we do,
it is our aim to practice hard, arrange well, and play to
the best of our ability for God's honor. However, we worship
together with those that lead in worship. So our audience
is not fellow worshippers, it is God. We never perform
to impress the group that we are there to worship with;
we surrender to worship God, as He is worthy of far
more than even our best effort. I hope that he doesn't mind
me quoting him, but Matt Redman makes a great point in
his book, The Unquenchable Worshipper: "To draw atention
to ourselves in moments meant for a holy beholding
is a pretty unbiblical approach...
There's no room for showing off in the holy throne room."

Semantics...

This is not just about semantics and different words that
mean generally the same thing. We are called to lead
worship. I think that two really huge mistakes that
can be made when "hiring the band" are hiring
a performance band to lead worship and hiring a
worship band to perform. Christian concerts are such and
awesome thing when you see people using their gifts to
glorify God. But if those people are there to lead worship,
the approach must be different.
We are called to lead worship.

All of this being said...
